State lawmakers are pushing for more safety measures when it comes to preventing accidental drowning deaths.

According to state officials, at least 46 children had died as a result of an accidental drowning in Florida by June 2024.

During last year’s legislative session, lawmakers pushed through a law that would provide swim lesson vouchers to families so that more people could learn to swim.

Now, lawmakers are proposing a new bill that would require at least one pool safety measure as specified in the bill for property transferred or purchase on or after Oct. 1, 2025 — regardless of when the pool was installed.

“We know this will prevent accidental drownings at low cost and save lives,” said State Senator Carlos Guillermo Smith, who is sponsoring the bill in the State Senate.

Asked if she is against banning countries from the Olympics due to conflicts, she stated, “I am, but I think that you have to take each situation into account.”

She further emphasised her vision of creating a taskforce aimed at developing policies and frameworks that could guide decisions regarding conflict-related issues in the Olympics.

A Pennsylvania high school freshman is now a state champion.

Rylee Kohan captured gold in the 50-yard freestyle at the PIAA Class 2A swimming championships, breaking a program record in that event.

But her victory came among a “wave of emotions” for her and the Westmont Hilltop community.

Rylee Kohan put on quite a performance at Bucknell University, shaving nearly a full second off her preliminary time to clock in at 23.22 seconds, just 0.12 seconds ahead of the runner up.

Not only did she secure a state title, but she also broke a program record that had stood since 1999.
