44-year-old swimming legend Dara Torres posted her best result since the Beijing Olympics on Thursday, with a 25.24 and 2nd in the 50 freestyle at the ATT Winter National Championships in Atlanta, Georgia. Fellow American Jessica Hardy was first in 25.08. Torres is happy, “It’s nice to finish second. I haven’t been second in a while. If I do that at the trials, I’ll be fine.” Via AFP

Herbert Nitsch preparing for a 800 feet ‘no limits’ freediving world record
Airline pilot and extreme freediver Herbert Nitsch freedived to at depth of 700 feet (-214 m) on June 14th 2007, putting him way ahead of his nearest competitors in the ‘no limits’ category. Now he is preparing for a 800 feet (-214 m) in the summer 2012, in this “torpedo sled” facilitating the descent and ascent with a underfoot ballast system and an overhead inflatable buoy. His ultimate goal is the ‘legendary’ (some would say ‘crazy’) barrier of 1,000 foot (-305 m).

Dana Vollmer ‘lives on pizza’
According to Universal Sports, U.S. swimmer Dana Vollmer discovered this year that she is allergic to gluten and eggs, meaning no bread and no all-American breakfast. Recently she and her husband discovered a solution in the form of gluten- and egg-free pizza crust, that tastes like normal pizza, and that she therefore uses for pizza and bread. “So basically I’m living on pizza, which I never thought that I would.”
