Swimmer snatched by crocodile in notorious Australian river

Police have recovered the body of a man who attempted to swim across a crocodile-infested river in the Australian Outback as well as the carcass of a crocodile that was shot by authorities, officials said Monday.
Sean Cole, 26, was snatched by a crocodile and dragged under the water Saturday as he and a friend were swimming in the Mary River during a birthday party.

Bitter battle of words between Leigh Nugent, Swimming Australia and AOC
Yesterday, Australian Olympic Committee boss John Coates ‘put a line through‘ now former Australian Swimming national head coach Leigh Nugent, saying that he has to take a lot of responsibility for the handling of the Pre-Games Stilnox incident, and “just let me say he won’t ever be on one of our teams again. And that’s our position.” The AOC report also criticized Swimming Australia for not taking the incident further ‘because of the imminence of the Games and the possibility of retribution towards their swimmers.”Now according to Herald Sun, then Swimming Australia president David Urquhart and chief executive Kevin Neil have broken their silence on the four investigations into swimming which cost at least $500,000, resulted in the loss of a $2 million annual sponsorship, plus public embarrassment for the six relay swimmers, rejecting claims from Leigh Nugent who told the AOC his bosses told him not to investigate the team behavioral issues, claiming instead that he kept them in the dark. Steven Robles recounts ‘swim from hell’ from Catalina Island to Rancho Palos
Read for instance Daily BreezeAfter training for months, the lifelong 49-year-old swimmer launched out just after midnight on Thursday morning to swim from Catalina Island to the shore of Rancho Palos Verdes.
More than 13 hours later, Robles — after battling unexpected rough seas that carried him several miles off course — staggered onto shore below Trump National Golf Club and immediately collapsed. On Friday, he remained hospitalized recovering from hypothermia and, according to medical tests, from what appeared to be also a mild heart attack.
The bright spot: Doctors released him from the hospital Friday afternoon after tests revealed there was no lasting damage to his heart — and his swim had raised thousands of dollars in pledges that will benefit the construction of classrooms at a school in Nicaragua, a cause long supported by his church in Hermosa Beach. “By the time I got close to shore, the water was so rough and the wind was blowing super hard,†he said. “Then as I swam toward the shore, thoroughly exhausted, the next thing thrown at me was a kelp bed, it covered me like a blanket, I had to fight my way through it.â€
