The sport of swimming is back in the news, with new questions being raised about whether swimming has effectively confronted a sexual abuse problem, a problem that’s been revealed in recent years. USA Swimming – the sport’s governing body in this country – announced an independent review of Safe Sport, their organization’s program to protect athletes from sexual abuse. NPR’s Tom Goldman reports.

A man who drowned in Lake Wissota was the same man who was arrested just hours earlier for child porn, 32-year-old Daniel Weggel who was a high school swimming coach in the Eau Claire school district. Police says evidence seized shows Weggel hid cameras in his home, in the homes of his victims and in other places in order to secretly capture images of the underage girls. He left a suicide note.

Dozens of swimmers braved murky waters on Sunday as an 18-year-old woman smashed the world record time for bog snorkelling. The 28th World Bog Snorkelling Championships saw 130 competitors from around the world, some in fancy dress, descend on Waen Rhydd Bog on the outskirts of Llanwrtyd Wells, Powys, mid Wales.

See also the official results on Green Events. Maguire’s record is apparently ‘men and women’.

The current World Champion is 18 year old Dineka Maguire from Northern Ireland in a time of 1 minute 23.13 seconds, which is a new World Record beating the previous record time held by Andrew Holmes of 1 minute 24.22 seconds by over a second.

ylogoSee ydetroitswims.org, “In the city of Detroit, 7 out of 10 children cannot swim, putting our children at an unacceptable risk of drowning. No child should fear the water. To teach a child to swim, we need to raise $100 per child. In addition, many children do not have suitable swimwear, so we also need donations of new and slightly used swimwear.”
