Doha 2013 World Cup stop accused of erasing Israeli flag

Israeli swimmers participating in the FINA Swimming World Cup in Doha, Qatar this week were publicly presented as nation-less competitors both by the announcer and in the live television broadcast.

When the Israelis were announced, they were labeled as coming from the nation of “ISR.” A similar snubbing occurred when the Israelis participated in the 2010 FINA event in Dubai.

During the actual competition, the live television broadcast displayed each competing swimmer’s name next to a graphic of his or her national flag. For all of the Israelis, that graphic was whited out.

Yamamoto Corp launches anti-radiation swimwear for Fukushima workers

Designed in an effort to protect Fukushima clean-up workers, Osaka-based swimwear company Yamamoto Corporation unveiled the anti-radiation garments on Thursday.

The company claims that the wetsuit made from stretchy rubberized kneaded carbon can stop 100 percent of beta radiation.

The swimwear – which weighs only three kilograms – is completely fused so the contaminated water cannot seep through. The suit therefore protects the person wearing it from aftermath illnesses such as cancer, according to its makers.

Yamamoto Corporation is also working on lead-based underwear which protects the lower part of the spine and abdomen from harmful gamma rays. The underwearâ€™s weight is 3.4 kilograms.

Sean Conway, 32, from Cheltenham, left west Cornwall on 30 June bound for the far north of the Scottish mainland.

He is attempting to become the first person to swim the route up Britain’s west coast.

On Monday, he was close to the tiny island of Handa off Scotland’s north west Sutherland coast after swimming about 10 miles a day. [â€¦]

Mr Conway hopes to complete his swim later this month.

Gerhard Zandberg confirms retirement following Swimming South Africa controversy

Former World Swimming Champion Gerhard Zandberg has confirmed that he has retired from the sport, following the Swimming South Africa controversy after him ‘breaking team rules’ at the Barcelona 2013 World Championships.

Zandberg had asked to swap rooms to avoid catching a cold that his roommate Cameron van der Burgh had contracted, and receiving no response, Zandberg paid for his own room, which he shared with his girlfriend Linda.

For this he received a punishment of 50,000 Rand ($5,000) which was later reduced to 4,000 Rand ($500); a 2-year suspension from swimming; 1 year of community service; and an immediate scratch from all World Cup events.

This left him with two options: either appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland, or retire. Waiting out a two-year suspension at his age would have been illogical.

Halsall (British Gas ITC, Loughborough) will be joined by the likes ofÂ Jazz CarlinÂ (British Gas ITC, Swansea),Â Andrew WillisÂ (British Gas ITC, Bath),Â Hannah MileyÂ (Garioch, Scotland) andÂ Craig McNallyÂ (Warrender, Scotland) as part of an 11-strong team.

â€œThis is a team which is focused on athletes that we feel can deliver medals either today or in the near future,â€ said British Swimming head coach Bill Furniss.

â€œIt continues the strategy we have adopted of smaller, more focused teams and this will continue to be a key philosophy going forward.

â€œCertain swimmers on the team will go to Denmark off the back of competing at the FINA World Cups and they will conclude the short course season inÂ Glasgow at the Duel in the Pool. This is part of a strategy of racing more often as we want to see our leading swimmers to be competing more regularly.

France 1:39.54 and new world record in the mixed 4×50 medley

At the FINA 2013 Swimming World Cup meet in Doha today, France took down the mixed 4×50 medley world record. Read for instance SwimmingWorld and see the result list here.

France demolished the world record that already should stand to them in the first place. Jeremy Stravius (23.25), Giacomo Perez Dortona (26.41), Melanie Henique (25.45) and Anna Santamans (24.53) turned in a 1:39.54 in the mixed relay event to crush the previous world record of 1:41.70 set by Russia at the Moscow stop.
