“In October of 2011, Georgios-Ioannis Tsianos swam continuously from the southern edge of Greece’s mainland, the Peloponnese, to the shores of the island of Crete, and covered a distance of 101km. He is the first swimmer in history to have attempted such a feat in the open Aegean Sea, while further, only a handful of swimmers worldwide have completed such distance at open sea in a single attempt. A medical doctor by profession, Georgios, through his swim, supported the charitable organization “Orizodas” from Chania in Crete, a local organization which provides support and looks after children and adults battling cancer. This short video is a compilation of edited amateur footage taken during his swim by his team members. Edited by Dimitris Giouzepas”

At a live KNZB press conference on YouTube today, Olympic champion Ranomi Kromowidjojo announced that she is terminating her cooperation with coach Marcel Wouda, opting instead for Wouda’s current assistant coach Christian Sloof. This follows the recent departure of KNZB technical director Jacco Verhaeren, who until about a year ago coached Kromowidjojo, before he went full-time as technical director and was replaced as coach by Wouda, Verhaeren now leaving Dutch swimming entirely to be national coach of Swimming Australia. Swimmer Bastiaan Lijesen is also putting an end to his cooperation with Wouda, while Femke Heemskerk stays with Wouda. • Text Messages Are Saving Swedes From Cardiac Arrest

Sweden has found a faster way to treat people experiencing cardiac emergencies through a text message and a few thousand volunteers.

A program called SMSlivräddare —or SMSLifesaver — solicits people who have been trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). When a Stockholm resident dials 112 for emergency services, a text message is sent to all volunteers within 500 meters of the person in need. The volunteer then arrives at the location within the crucial first minutes to perform lifesaving CPR. The odds for surviving cardiac arrest drop 10% for every minute it takes first responders to arrive.

“The traditional emergency services, especially the ambulance — they have problems in the Stockholm area,” said Dr. Mårten Rosenqvist, a professor of cardiology and spokesman for the group. “First there are not so many, second there is heavy traffic in Stockholm, and third, they are usually occupied by doing other things: transporting patients to the emergency room, or transporting patients between hospitals.”

With ambulance resources stretched thin, the average response time is some eight minutes, allowing SMS-livräddare-volunteers to reach victims before ambulances in 54% of cases.

With the 94th National Sports Festival heading toward the finish line, Olympic swimming star Park Tae-hwan has emerged as the front-runner for the MVP honors.

Park, the gold medalist in the men’s 400-meter freestyle at the 2008 Beijing Summer Games, has snatched up four swimming medals through Tuesday. Competing at the swimming arena bearing his own name in the host city of Incheon, west of Seoul, Park finished first in the men’s 200m freestyle, 400m freestyle, 4×100m relay and 4×200m relay.

He was the anchor in both of the relay events and mounted a huge comeback over the final stretch to give his Incheon team gold medals.
