A veteran principal, educator and coach died Saturday while competing with his family as a team in the 10th annual Pumpkinman Triathlon.

Patrick Hayden, 59, was pronounced dead at 9:30 a.m. at Boulder City Hospital, according to the Clark County coroner’s office. He was found unresponsive about 8:55 a.m. Saturday while swimming the first leg of the event. Family members were to do the running and bicycling legs of the competition. […]

Hayden would have been 60 years old in January, Dawn said. He was an active swimmer and frequented the Y to stay in shape.

Vanover said the park rangers weren’t sure what caused him to lose consciousness in the water.

Swimming coach Bob Bowman, who guided Michael Phelps to 18 gold, two silver and two bronze medals over four Olympic Games, is now working with France’s promising young champion Yannick Agnel.

Before an afternoon training session, and just back from the dentist’s chair, he fielded a few questions from AFP, punctuating his responses with an easy laugh.

AFP: Is Agnel the next Michael Phelps?

Bowman: No, he’s the first Yannick. He is really quite similar to Michael in some ways — his mental approach, his dedication to training, those sort of things. But he’s also quite different and I think he can stand on his own. He doesn’t need a comparison to someone else… In the big moments he tends to give his best performance, and that’s a hallmark of a great swimmer.

For the first time divers at the Flint Riverquarium tested the waters, carving a pumpkin submerged under water.

It’s all in preparation for the center’s Halloween celebrations. Next week, they’ll jump into the blue hole with some more pumpkins for the center’s first underwater carving show at 6pm.
