A new fad is sweeping the capital of landlocked and war-weary Afghanistan: swimming pools.
The city has at least eight massive new pool clubs. Extras usually include saunas, Jacuzzis, massages, smoothies and sandwiches.
“Sure, we don’t have beaches like Brazil, or clubs like Dubai. But we have created our own beaches and clubs here with these pools,†said 25-year-old college student Mirwaiz Taraki between back-flips at the Nazari Sauna and Pool in Kabul’s posh New City neighborhood.

Tonight at the West-Danish Regional Short Course Championships in Aarhus, Aalborg’s elite team led by Mie Østergaard Nielsen demolished the Danish (club) record in the women’s 4×100 medley, with a time of 4:00.21 replacing Swim Team Odense’s Danish record of 4:03.06 from the Danish Short Course Championships in 2009, then featuring Rikke Møller Pedersen in the breaststroke. The Danish national team record is 3:49.87, from when they won gold at the Istanbul 2012 World Short Course Championships.
Aalborg’s split times now were Mie Ø. Nielsen 57.35 – Louise B. Dalgaard 1:08.6* – Mathilde Pugholm Hvid 59.7* and Julie Levisen 54.38 (*the breaststroke and butterfly splits apparently a bit messed up of technical reasons, see the result list)
At the West-Danish Short Course Championships tonight, Aalborg prodigy Mie Østergaard Nielsen clocked 1:55.04 and a new Danish record in the women’s 200 meter freestyle, demolishing Lotte Friis’ record of 1:55.64 from the Danish Team Championships back in the supersuited days of 2009. Her third Danish record in a few weeks, see the result list here. The West- and East Danish Short Course Championships is a pair of regional championships that the Danes arrange a few weeks before the ‘real’ Danish Short Course Championships, to be arranged in Gladsaxe 14-17 November 2013.

Just a photo from the LEN 2012 European Swimming Championships in Debrecen, Hungary. In the pool the men’s 400 meter freestyle preliminary heat 4 of 5 with Kis Gergo (HUN) leading and Sebastien Rouault (FRA) in second. Kis Gergo ended up winning silver in the final, behind Germany’s Paul Biedermann.
