Concern is growing that more could have been done to prevent a child’s drowning in a Balch Springs pond last week.

Tamia Johnson, 9, drowned on May 18 while swimming in a retention pond at the new Walter E. Luedeke Park, located in the 3200 block of Hickory Creek Road.

“I don’t understand why it takes a fatality for something to be done,” Weldon Colbert, a Balch Springs resident, told city council members Tuesday night.

A New Smyrna Beach man recorded video of sharks just feet from young swimmers over Memorial Day weekend and posts it to YouTube, where it’s gained more than 7,000 views.

The video shows the danger lurking off the coast in waist-deep water, right off of New Smyrna Beach Inlet.

“I noticed a bunch of dark shadows in the water and I thought, ‘Wow, this is interesting, I wonder what this is,’” said Steve Anest. “It became apparent just by their signature shape that they were sharks. Sharks were everywhere. In a second, if I would’ve fallen off, or she would’ve fallen, that’s where the fear came in.”

It was sink or swim Tuesday as students from Wilmington Academy of Arts and Science took part in the Cardboard Boat Regatta at Echo Farms Pool.

Students were teamed up in their science classes to build boats only out of cardboard and clear packing tape. The goal was to put two passengers in the boats and paddle 25 yards across the pool without sinking.

Some students took the challenge very seriously, applying buoyancy formulas to engineer their boats just right to hold their weight, others do not and some sink immediately.
