Stanford Rape Case: Attorney Says Charges Could Be Hard To Prove
A former star swimmer at Stanford University pleaded not guilty today to five counts of sexual assault for allegedly raping a drunk and unconscious woman outside an on-campus fraternity party last month, prosecutors said.
Brock Allen Turner, 19, was charged last week with five felony counts of sexual assault. Deputies allegedly found him pinned by two good Samaritans who encountered him on top of the woman outside the Kappa Alpha house at 664 Lomita Court on Jan. 18, according to a report by Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office.
If convicted of the charges, Turner could face a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, district attorney’s spokesman Sean Webby said today.

Sink or Swim? The global drowning crisis
Every year, nearly 400,000 people round the globe die by drowning, making it one of the world’s most common causes of accidental death.
Now several projects – from playpens to drones – are attempting to tackle the problem.
Unlike malaria and malnutrition, there is no global programme aimed at reducing the death toll from drowning.
Its sporadic nature means prevention can be difficult – patrolling every shore and riverbank would be impossible.
But some things can be done, such as preventing overcrowding on ships and ferries, improving flood defences and having national water safety plans.
And it can often be local efforts that make the real difference.

New Twist in Park Tae-hwan Doping Scandal
The doping scandal involving swimmer Park Tae-hwan took a new twist on Thursday after an acquaintance of the athlete’s said Park actively sought the services of the dubious clinic he is suing.
Prosecutors on Thursday questioned a broker offering beauty consulting to wealthy clients and entertainers and hooking them up with clinics.
The woman told prosecutors that Park asked her through a mutual acquaintance to “look for a clinic” for as yet obscure reasons and that she set him up in November of 2013 with the clinic that injected him with the banned drug Nebido.
Park has claimed that the clinic offered him free treatments and that he received the injection without knowing it contained a banned substance.
Park’s agency Team GMP in a statement on Monday claimed the swimmer was given the injection in July last year while he was receiving a free chiropractic treatment at the suggestion of the clinic. Team GMP said Park double-checked with the doctor if the injection contained any banned substances. The swimmer is suing the clinic after he failed a doping test.
But if the broker’s testimony is true, it raises the question why Park sought treatments in a clinic specializing in anti-aging and skin care. One staffer at the clinic said, “We did not approach Park Tae-hwan and we don’t need the publicity.”

Dog dies after swimming in toxic Bay Area lake
Dog owners are being warned to be careful after at least one dog, and maybe more, died from swimming in a toxic lake. The conditions at Lake Chabot may have been brought on by the drought.
It’s suspected that the slimy blue-green algae in the lake caused the death of a dog that played with Karen Johanson’s dog. They share the same veterinarian. Johanson said the dog that died was “the sweetest chocolate lab, Josie. Just a wonderful dear gentle soul.”
“In the 80 year history of the park district, this is the first year we’ve had a toxic algae blooms,” Carolyn Jones, an East Bay Regional Parks spokesperson, said.
Signs have been placed around Lake Chabot warning people and their pets not to come in contact with the water. It’s believed the drought created ripe conditions for this algae bloom.

Ex-Stanford Swimmer Admits To Fondling, But Denies Raping Unconscious Woman At Frat Party
A former Stanford University student charged Wednesday with raping a drunk and unconscious woman at an on-campus fraternity party Jan. 18 admitted to sexually fondling her after consuming nine alcoholic drinks but denied raping her, according to a report from the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office.
Brock Allen Turner, 19, charged Wednesday in Superior Court in Palo Alto with five felony counts of sexual assault, said he met the woman that night at a party at the Kappa Alpha House at 664 Lomita Court, and they ended up kissing while on the ground outside the house, according to a statement he gave to deputies assigned to the Stanford campus.
Turner said he took off the woman’s underwear, digitally penetrated her and touched her breasts, but never took off his pants, the report said.
He said that the woman rubbed his back and seemed to enjoy the activity and his “intentions were not to try and rape the girl without her consent†but to “’hook up’ with a girl,†the report said.

Ex-Stanford Swimmer Allegedly Rapes Woman In Public
Two bikers allegedly caught an ex-Stanford University student raping an unconscious woman on the university’s Palo Alto, California campus.
Brock Allen Turner, 19, is accused of raping a woman during the early hours of Sunday, Jan. 18, according to the Stanford Daily.
He’s charged with raping an intoxicated person, raping an unconscious person, sexual penetration with a foreign object of an intoxicated and unconscious woman, and assault with intent to commit rape.
The Los Angeles Times reports that two men riding their bikes allegedly discovered Turner raping the woman and chased after him. They eventually tackled him and held him while a third person called police.
