It’s time for a radical change in the way the Olympic world picks its host cities.

It’s time for the sports world to tell the International Olympic Committee that it can no longer bankrupt cities in the name of hosting the Olympics.

It’s time for a rotation of cities that have already successfully put on the Olympics and have venues already in place to host the Winter and Summer Games, with a new site thrown in every fourth Olympiad.

  • Park officials hunt hot spring swimmer who jeopardized critically endangered Banff snails

Authorities are trying to locate a rogue swimmer after reports of an illegal dip that potentially devastated the Banff hot spring habitat of a highly endangered snail.

Despite warning signs around the pool in the Cave and Basin National Historic Site, park officials believe a rogue bather entered the water on Sunday Mar. 3.

His action disturbed a thin membrane of organic material on the water’s surface which is invaluable to the survival of the Banff Springs snail.

“There was destruction and damage to their critical habitat including the microbial mat,” Dr. Dwayne Lepitzki, a conservation biologist who studies the snails, told CTV Calgary.

“There could have been a few individuals that died but we’ll never be able to know exactly how many died.”

According to researchers the rare snail population has at times been fewer than 100.

Set to open in Poway on March 18th, The Florence pays tribute to legendary swimmer Florence Chadwick. Florence May Chadwick was an American swimmer known for long-distance open water swimming.

She was the first woman to swim the English Channel in both directions, setting a time record each time. She was also the first woman to swim the Catalina Channel, the Straits of Gibraltar, the Bosporus, and the Dardanelles.

On International Women’s Day, News 8’s Ashley Jacobs takes you inside the restaurant before anyone else. Speaking with Legal Restaurants Partner Nick Sanderson, she learns so much about the athlete and shares it as he gives a tour of the new space, pointing out trophies, old photos, even her swimsuit!

Executive Chef Ricardo Heredia plates several dishes, explaining how Chadwick inspired each one.

Summer registrations are now open for the beautiful and popular Hamilton Pool Preserve.

Located in Dripping Springs, the Hamilton Pool Preserve was designated a nature preserve by the Travis County Commissioner’s Court in 1990. According to the county’s parks website, it is located upstream from the Pedernales River.

“Hamilton Creek spills out over limestone outcroppings to create a 50-foot waterfall as it plunges into the head of a steep box canyon. The waterfall never completely dries up, but in dry times it does slow to a trickle. However, the pool’s water level stays pretty constant, even during periods of drought.”
