The World Anti-doping Agency said Wednesday it had filed an appeal against a decision to clear Chinese swimming star Sun Yang of missing an out of competition doping test.

WADA, meeting in Lausanne, told AFP that it had filed the appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport following a decision by swimming’s world governing body FINA not to pursue a case against the multiple world champion.

Sun, who has won Olympic gold in the 200m, 400m and 1,500m freestyle, missed an out-of-competition test on September 4 at his home in China’s Zhejiang province.

“WADA has filed a CAS appeal in the case of Sun Yang,” a spokesman for the anti-doping authority said.

West Midlands Police has objected to the planned site in Smethwick which will become a new leisure centre after the 2022 games.

The force has made an objection to Sandwell Council over fears about a lack of protection from terrorist attacks.

Sandwell’s planning committee is due to decide whether to approve the planning application at a meeting tonight.

The state-of-the-art facility, earmarked for Londonderry Playing Fields, would cost £60million to build and host swimming events at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

There is no better way to start the day than an early morning sea swim. It’s physical, mental, spiritual, communal – all wrapped up in a simple dip in the sea. A group of women, who call themselves the ‘Morning Swimmers of Sandagerði’, brave the icy waters of the North Atlantic, along the coastline of the Faroe Islands, for their morning dip in the ocean. They go in every day of the year, sunshine or snow, unless a storm roughs up the water too much. And for them it is as much about connection and friendship as it is about exercise and invigoration.
