  • Grant ‘Scooter’ Patterson may be half as tall as many people but he doesn’t do things by halves.

    The 30-year-old swimmer from Cairns works hard, plays hard and flogs himself in the pool as he vies for a Paralympic medal.

    He has a rare form of dwarfism called diastrophic dysplasia and gets around on a tricycle, hence his nickname.

    He gives everything 158 per cent and lives by the motto: ‘take no prisoners’.

     

  • A man survived a terrifying bear attack by swimming to safety across a lake, according to the B.C. Conservation Officer Service.

    Sgt. Steve Ackles says it happened Wednesday at the Ferguson Lake Nature Reserve on the northeastern edge of Prince George.

    The bear chased the man into the reedy, shallow waters of the lake and Ackles says it was able to get on top of him two or three times, but the man was able to free himself and keep swimming.

    A woman nearby heard the man yelling and released her dog which distracted the bear, allowing the man to swim about 400 metres across the lake to the safety of a dock.

    Ackles says the man received only minor injuries.

  • This morning, Saturday September 7, in Nantou (TPE), Australia’s Nicholas Sloman and Brazil’s Ana Marcela Cunha dominated the 10km men and women’s races of the penultimate leg of the FINA/CNSG Marathon Swim World Series.

    Veteran and current 5km and 25km World Champion Cunha won her third title this season, after triumphing in Doha (QAT) and Setubal (POR). She touched home in 2h2m37s60, in front of the two strong rivals from Italy Arianna Bridi and Rachele Bruni who completed the podium in this order in 2h2m40s00 and 2h2m40s20 respectively.

    Nicholas Sloman, 21, clinched his first gold medal of the 2019 circuit, after improving from a silver in the Seychelles. He was the fastest in 1h56m31s20 and was closely followed by teammate Hayden Cotter (1h56m36s80) and Italy’s Matteo Furlan who clocked a time of 1h56m38s40.

    The Series will conclude on September 29 in Chun’An (CHN) after nine legs across the Middle-East, Asia, Europe and North America.

  • Hannah Kim is on the swimming team at Nease High School. Hannah is a member of the National Honor Society, the National Association of High School Scholars, the Interact Club, the Nease Choir and Link Crew. She volunteers at Camp I Am Special, is a water safety instructor and a certified lifeguard. Hannah currently has a 4.3 GPA.

  • The law, the Limitation of Liability Act of 1851, has been used routinely by ship operators, including the owner of the Titanic. In recent years, it has been invoked by the owners in the Deep Water Horizon oil rig disaster, the sinking of the El Faro cargo ship in 2015 and duck boat deaths such as the 2018 sinking in Missouri that killed 17 .

    Rose called it a “distasteful old law” that traces to the days when the shipping industry could not obtain insurance. Now, it is those insurers — not the boat owner or operator — who push for such a strategy, since they may bankroll the defense.
