FSU student severely injured in Naples swimming accident shares her story
The Florida State University freshman was on her Thanksgiving break in Naples visiting friends she grew up with when she was hurt. Schroeder spent most of her life in Southwest Florida before her family moved to Georgia two years ago.
While she was on a boat with her friends, Schroeder dove into the water headfirst near Keewaydin Island. She hit her head on the bottom floor. Now, she has a severe spine injury and is paralyzed from the chest down.
When she first arrived at the hospital over a week ago, she couldn’t move her arms. Now, she’s able to move them and she’s even teaching herself how to drink on her own.

Dutch freestyle swimmer Ranomi Kromowidjojo is a three-time Olympic champion. She won gold in the 4 × 100m freestyle relay at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, and in the 50m freestyle and 100m freestyle at the 2012 Olympics. A new survey commissioned by Swim Australia, the peak body for swimming instructors, shows Australian children – maybe as many as half – are not attending swimming lessons this year. The parents say it is too expensive and there is some COVID-related reluctance. And it is not just the children who can’t swim. According to Brendon Ward, the CEO of Swim Australia, over half the parents surveyed said they had only basic or poor swimming skills themselves.
