The supersuits were wrong, philosophically speaking
So, I’m totally out of my depth here, but this article is interesting, discussing whether the supersuits were wrong or not, philosophically speaking. The conclusion is that yes, if we value fair competition and the ability to compare results against an absolute standard over time, then the supersuits were wrong.- (11) If some technological advance undermines a valuable aspect of a sporting activity, then the use of that technology is wrong (within that sport).
- (12) Inter-temporal comparisons of sporting (or, maybe, just swimming) performances are valuable.
- (13) The use of performance-enhancing swimsuits, such as those used in the 2009 SWCs, undermines the inter-temporal comparison of swimming performances by making such comparisons unfair.
- (1*) Therefore, the use of performance-enhancing swimsuits in the sport of swimming is wrong.

Ryan Lochte nearly dropped his 2011 Male Race of the Year Golden Goggles Award :-P
As Ryan Lochte accepted his award for the Male Race of the Year Award at USA Swimming’s Golden Goggles Sunday night, he pulled a typical Ryan Lochte move: He nearly dropped the trophy.
One estimate says the hardware is worth in the range og $1,500, so it was a good thing Lochte caught it before it fell to the floor.

Maryland Swimming will stay if they raise $11.56 million by June 30
University of Maryland president Wallace Loh announced today that they’ll cut eight sports from its athletics roster, including swimming & diving – but also that the teams each have a chance to save themselves by raising eight years of total costs by June 30. The diving grandmas of Jeju Island
Haenyo literally means ‘sea women’, and is a centuries old tradition on the island of Jeju, 53 miles south of mainland Korea. Women diving for conch, octopus, urchin and abalone, because if their men did it, they’d have to pay taxes, and that wouldn’t make it profitable. The reason for them being mostly grandmas today, is because it unfortunately is a dying trade.
Imagine, 17 meters down, holding your breath for two minutes each time, having to be able to ride a wave for 3 meters, if you want to be called a real ‘haenyo’. Only once a day, but for 7 to 8 hours :-)

Ryan Lochte and Missy Franklin win Athletes of the Year awards at Golden Goggles
