A month ago, 12-year-old Dale Ostrander was pulled lifeless from a beach in southwest Washington after being under water for 15 minutes. Today, he is walking and dressing himself, frustrated that he cannot communicate properly yet, but still remembering his dog, his sisters and movies he’s watched. Via seattlepi.com

  • Acidic swimming pool nearly destroys man’s teeth

It took a bevy of specialists and faculty members at the New York University (NYU) College of Dentistry to unravel the mystery of how a 52-year-old male patient lost nearly all the enamel of his teeth in five months.

He was loosing weight and he’s a very fit individual; he looked like somebody who could be anemic, bulimic, or anorexic because he was very thin and tall. The possibility of eating disorders was discussed, but then the erosion would be on the inner surfaces of the teeth, not the outer surfaces.

Turns out he had started swimming 90 minutes a day over the course of the summer in the pool at his home, which was improperly chlorinated and highly acidic. He got sensitive teeth from it, resulting in him not eating because even the air from breathing would hurt his teeth.

Grueling story here: The Australian reported that the officer from Dunsborough, on the southwest coast of Western Australia, said “she took some peace from the fact we could say (because of) the nature of his injuries he obviously didn’t suffer for too long”

Her 21-year-old bodyboarding son was bitten in half and instantly killed by a suspected great white shark at the West Australian surf break on Sunday.

45-year-old (Paralympic gold medalist) Anders Olsson says that they laughed at him when he came to compete in the 9th Annual Alcatraz Classic: Swim With The Centurions, as the first swimmer ever without functioning legs to enter this grueling competition. But he nevertheless beat them all, swimming 2.6 kilometers (1.5 miles) in the rough and frigid waters of the San Francisco bay, from Alcatraz to the mainland, in record time 24 minutes and 32 seconds. My personal and totally subjective comment: They call it “for experienced open-water swimmers only”, we call it “nothing”. Ahh, it is a good day to be Nordic ;-) Via The Local.

Read more for instance on SwimNews.com and nzherald.co.nz. Swimmer Moss Burmester whose retirement last year triggered the review says according to Radio New Zealand that it is the right move.

  • Open water swimmers wanted for a new British feature film

Kathleen Crawford Casting is looking for one Scandinavian-looking extreme swimmer/surfer and a pair of strong swimmers to play ‘young mum and dad’, for a feature film to be shot in Scotland and London this fall. This is paid work you guys, no acting experience necessary, but in shape to run and swim repeatedly for days in choppy seas off the coast of Scotland. Embedded movies are previous involvements ‘Sexy Beast’, ‘Birth’ and ‘Attack the Block’ See this Facebook page.

    SWIMMER (SCANDINAVIAN)

He should be male, 22-35, look Scandinavian, German, Finnish / Icelandic.

The character is living in a tent on a beach on the coast of Scotland for a bit. He might be a backpacker who has stopped up for a week, month, year – we never find out. He must look at home with that lifestyle i.e. a healthy, outdoors type of person. He has a quiet intensity to him. He should be fearless, and it would be instinctive to him to run into the sea if someone were to get into trouble in the water.

Extreme swimmers/surfers would be ideal for this role.

    YOUNG DAD AND YOUNG MUM

Both aged 27-35. Can be any ethnicity and accent. They are a couple on the beach with their toddler and dog. BOTH MUST BE STRONG SWIMMERS.

N.B. For ALL of these part you really MUST be an excellent swimmer, as filming will involve running into/and swimming in choppy seas off the coast of Scotland, and repetition of action for the purposes of doing several takes will mean it will be tiring.
