At the French Olympic Trials today, Camille Muffat set a new French national in the women’s 400 meter freestyle, with a time of 4:01.13 besting Laure Manaudou’s 4:02.13 from the European Championships in 2006, and the world textile record of 4:01.97 set by Federica Pellegrini at the Shanghai 2011 World Championships. She and Coralie Balmy qualified for the Olympics, Balmy with a 4:05.45 in the event. Mom saves daughter from shark attack
Valeh Levy and her 15-year-old daughter, Sydney, were paddling on their surfboards Wednesday off New Smyrna Beach in Florida when a shark suddenly pulled the teen underwater — twice. Levy pulled her daughter onto her board. Read more here on ABC News
“It was to me like a scene out of ‘Jaws,’ where the girl’s getting sucked under, and I said, ‘There’s no way this thing is going to kill my daughter,’ and I grabbed her shoulders and I pulled her up and I threw her on the nose of my board,†Levy told WKMG-TV.

James “The Missile” Magnussen rockets to a 47.10 in the 100 free
On the 5th day of Australian Trials, James Magnussen scorched the men’s 100 meter freestyle final with a 47.10, obviously qualifying for the Olympics ahead of also qualifying James Roberts in 47.63, with Matt Targett (48.32), Eamon Sullivan (48.53), Cameron McEvoy (48.58) and Tommaso D’Orsogna (48.64) also qualifying for the London 4×100 relay. Magnussen’s time is 0:39 seconds faster than his former world’s best ever in textile, and only 0.19 from Cielo’s supersuited world record. In the men’s 200 breaststroke, Brenton Rickard qualified with a time of 2:11.03, ahead of also qualifying Jeremy Meyer in 2:12.76, and in the 200 butterfly, Jessicah Schipper and Samantha Hamill qualified in 2:06.93 and 2:08.92 respectively. Peacock breaks 22-year-old NCAA record set by Janet Evans
Yesterday evening at the NCAA champinships in Auburn, North Carolina swimmer Stephanie Peacock won the 1650 freestyle with a time of 15:38.79, breaking the existing NCAA record of 15:39:15 set by Janet Evans on March 17, 1990. Via newsobserver

Solli and Jakobsson set Norwegian records at Amsterdam Swim Cup
On the final day of Amsterdam Swim Cup, Lavrans Solli and former Icelandic swimmer Sindri Thor Jakobsson managed to improve upon each their Norwegian national record, Solli with first a 26.15 in the prelims and then a 25.99 and bronze in the men’s 50 backstroke, and Jakobsson with a time of 2:01.20 in the 200 butterfly. Magnussen targets the 100 free world record at the Australian trials
James Magnussen is hoping he can threaten Cesar Cielo’s 100 meter freestyle world record of 46.91 in Monday night’s Australian Olympics trials final, after cruising through the semi-finals in 47.93. This despite of struggling with illness. Read for instance ninemsn and The Sydney Morning Herald.
“Taper seems to get me every year and I’m feeling a bit crook again,” Magnussen said.
“I was sort of hoping this morning just to stay nice and light and not have to push myself.
“I won a world championships having pneumonia so if anything it hasn’t really worried too much – if I have to swim with one lung, so be it.”
