Old Olympic events revived as Foster, Goodhew take ‘the Plunge’ for Sport Relief
A century ago, Olympic events included underwater swimming, an obstacle course and an event called “the plunge” – so why did they disappear?
Olympic medal swimmers Mark Foster and Duncan Goodhew put on their Victorian bathers to find out, ahead of the Big Splash for Sports Relief later this month.

Boat Race protest swimmer raises Olympic concerns
‘It just takes one idiot,’ says British Olympic Association chairman Colin Moynihan after 35-year-old (Australian) Trenton Oldfield swam into paths of the boats in the 158th London Boat Race yesterday, forcing it to be temporarily halted. Read The Guardian and The Telegraph
“It just takes, and is likely to be, one idiot,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live. “It’s not likely to be a well-orchestrated campaign through Twitter or websites. It is likely to be someone similar to the idiot yesterday who causes major disruption. That is why all the security measures need to be put in place to minimize the chance of that happening.”

Japan Swim: Barren last day, 27 selected for Olympics
As written here on SwimNews, the last day of national Japanese championships was a barren one as far at London 2012 qualification was concerned, closes call Takuro Fujii in the men’s 100 butterfly, 51.91 and second-fastest time in the world this year, far surpassing the FINA A cut of 52.36, but still almost a tenth of a second off the Japanese cut of 51.92. 27 swimmers were selected for the Japanese Olympic team, read SwimmingWorld Magazine here and here

Japan Swim: Irie impresses (again) in the 200 back
At the Japan Swim today, Ryosuke Irie clocked a sizzling 1:54.03 in the men’s 200 backstroke, behind only his own 1:54.02 in the world this year, with the rest of the world somewhere above 1:56. He and Kazuki Watanabe qualified for the London Olympics, Watanabe in 1:56.83. Satomi Suzuki posted a second-best time in the world this year of 2:22.99 in the women’s 200 breaststroke, qualifying together with Kanako Watanabe in 2:23.56. And in the men’s 200 IM, Kosuke Hagino qualified with a 1:58.01 Japanese junior record, Ken Takakuwa also qualifying in 1:58.20. Read more here on SwimmingWorld Magazine.
