  • Ian Thorpe still believes he has a future in the pool

The 30-year-old Australian has cited his short preparation time as the reason for his failed comeback last year and is confident he could still swim at the elite level.

“I still have a life in the pool,” Thorpe told the BBC.

But Australian coach Leigh Nugent has poured cold water on the return, admitting it would be “a big ask” for the Thorpedo.

“Ian is such an enigmatic character and a brilliant athlete, but if you really haven’t got that gut burning desire to do it well then maybe you have to look at other things,” Nugent told the BBC.

Thorpe admitted taking a “ego bashing” after focusing on the 100m and 200m events as a sprinter and Nugent believes the 10-time Commonwealth champion needs to return to his previous guise as a middle-distance specialist.

“His physiology suits the 200-400m area and to try and break into the sprint area is pretty tough for him,” explained Nugent.

A really nice ‘iPhone diary’ captured by Aleksander Hetland’s roommate Petter Fagerlund, the day after Hetland won gold at the Istanbul 2012 World Championships. Unfortunately (naturally) in Norwegian, but what Hetland is discussing while driving is that it of course it is cool to end his swimming carreer as world champion, but that he still will end it, despite of people saying that he can’t stop now. He also says that if he had managed to qualify for the Olympics this summer, he probably would have stopped there, so maybe it was just as well that he didn’t.

The Whittier College aquatics program joined with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department this week to help them strengthen their relationship with the City of Whittier, while also helping build camaraderie within the aquatics program.

The training session occurred at Huntington Beach and allowed both the swimming & diving and water polo teams to work out with the Field Operations Training Unit (FOTU) conducting tests including overall conditioning, physical fitness and defensive tactics. The training itself was not only self-defense tactics from the elite-training unit, but was also great for team unification.
