Australian Olympic swimmer refused ‘B12 injection’ back in the 1980s
Read The Sydney Morning Herald
An Australian Olympic medal-winning swimmer has revealed she refused her coach’s instructions to take a vitamin injection for fear it contained illegal performance-enhancing substances.
The female freestyler was a mainstay of the national squad during the 1980s, winning Olympic and Commonwealth medals.
As a teenager, she said she felt pressured by her coach to receive a B12 injection from a doctor. However, sensing the substance could be more sinister, she refused.
Speaking on the condition of anonymity, she said: “They wanted me to get this injection – but I had this feeling it wasn’t B12. It just felt wrong and I was highly suspicious. I couldn’t understand why I needed an injection when I could have got it as a supplement.”

CC photo #407: Coaches trying out lactate training
Part of this weekend’s “Træner 2” basic coaching course here in the Faroe Islands. Here 15 second max sprints back and forth (me skipping the last repeat because I suck miserably at speed and changes of direction). Then 4 x 1 min ‘lactate tolerance’, and then 3 x 3 min endurance. All this so that we could try on our own bodies how it feels, and now we do. Ouch.
