  • Today, Paralympian, Oscar Pistorius was granted bail of 1 million Rand (112700 USD) in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Friday.     JUST pathetic.

    That’s the verdict from an Olympic relay legend on today’s statement from the shamed London 4×100 relay team – who today admitted to a wild, Stilnox-fuelled bonding night in the lead-up to last year’s Games.

    Michael Delany, who at 18 won silver as part of Australia’s legendary “Mean Machine” 4×100 relay team at the 1984 Games, could not be more scathing of the team when he spoke to news.com.au this afternoon.

    “They couldn’t speak for themselves,” Delany told news.com.au. “I thought it was pathetic that there was just the one statement.”

    The six members of Australia’s ill-fated men’s 4x100m Olympic freestyle relay team are likely to face financial penalties from the Australian Olympic Committee.

    It comes after they admitted deliberately breached the Australian Olympic team rules by taking the banned prescription drug Stilnox as part of a “bonding” night at their pre-Olympic camp in Manchester ahead of last year’s London Games.

    Five of the six – world 100m freestyle champion James Magnussen, Eamon Sullivan, Matt Targett, Tommaso D’Orsogna and Cameron McEvoy – admitted to taking Stilnox tablets on their “bonding night” at the Manchester camp. The sixth man, James Roberts, said he did not take the tablet.

    Sullivan and Targett admitted to supplying the drug to their teammates, although they insisted it was a “communal” decision to take the medication.

    Local former swim coach Rick Curl, whose namesake club became internationally renowned for its elite competitors, pleaded guilty Thursday to one count of child sexual abuse involving one of his former swimmers, Kelley Currin, in the 1980s.

    Sentencing is set for May 23. Curl, 63, faces a maximum of 15 years in prison.

    British tourist Michael Baugh and his wife said water had only dribbled out of the taps at the downtown Cecil Hotel for days.

    On Tuesday, after showering, brushing their teeth and drinking some of the tap water, they headed down to the lobby and found out why.

    The body of a Canadian woman had been discovered at the bottom of one of four cisterns on the roof of the historic hotel near Skid Row. The tanks provide water for hotel taps and would have been used by guests for washing and drinking.

    Authorities say the guest don’t need to worry about falling ill, as tests confirmed no sign of live bacteria in the tank. Officials believe the chlorine in the water likely killed any potentially harmful bacteria. Read for instance CTV News

    Orioles manager Buck Showalter sensed some nervousness in record-setting Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps as he lingered around the Orioles batting cage.

    Phelps, a Baltimore-area native, clutched a bat and wore an orange Orioles jersey with No. 18 on the back – for the record number of Olympic gold medals Phelps has won as a world-class swimmer.
