“Doctors say that swimming is one of the best forms of exercise that women can do while they’re pregnant, but as Jenna found out, sometimes the stakes can be pretty high in those prenatal swimming classes. The solution? A private refresher course with Olympian Dara Torres. TODAY’s Jenna Wolfe reports.”

Kevin Short died Sunday in what officials simply describe as a tragic, freak accident. He was swimming with others near Garland Bend on Lake Cumberland when an exposed cord came too close to an aluminum ladder.

“What happened was the cord went in between the ladder and the dock, it had a raw space,” said Donna Gross, Short’s mother-in-law.
Kevin’s 12-year-old son, Kevin, Jr. was actually swimming toward the ladder when his father grabbed it first.

“When he was reaching for the ladder, he pulled his son back by playing, like ‘I’m going to beat you to it,’and so big Kevin grabbed the ladder, that’s when he got electrocuted, so that actually saved little Kevin,” said Gross.

And you know what? - It might even work !

A grandfather who suffered a massive heart attack on a bus has told how he was saved by a Good Samaritan – who performed CPR on him while singing Bee Gees classic ‘Stayin’ Alive’.

Retired taxi boss Terry Holly, 67, slumped to the floor of the double-decker bus in front of horrified passengers as he headed home from seeing his ex-wife.

Sharon Thorneywork realised the father-of-three’s heart had failed and remembered a TV advert telling viewers to administer CPR by pumping the chest in time to the Bee Gees’ song.

On this first day of the 2013 Danish Swimming Championships, Viktor Bromer from Aalborg finally managed to take down Benny Nielsen’s 26-year-old 200 meter butterfly record, 1:57.67 to Nielsen’s 1:57.74 from the European Championships in Strasbourg, France, August 22nd, 1987.

Bromer comments: “It just feels so good and I am happy and relieved now, as I have chased this record for 3 to 4 championships by now. So it is just cool, this.”

A strong final day in which Olympic gold medallists Nathan Adrian (50m freestyle), Lochte (200m individual medley) and Katie Ledecky (1500m freestyle) set world-leading times gave the US team some momentum but it does not look the force of last year.

It has swimmers ranked No 1 in six events. Missy Franklin is the standout in the 100m and 200m backstroke, but that is one short of Australia’s seven top spots.

Before the US trials began, Australians were setting the pace in nine events and the fact that they have held on to seven of those positions is very encouraging.

Cate Campbell (50m and 100m freestyle), Alicia Coutts (100m butterfly and 200m individual medley), Christian Sprenger and James Magnussen (100m freestyle) still hold the fastest times of the year.

That is not to suggest that the Australian team is ready to go toe-to-toe with the US for international supremacy this year but it is encouraging for a young Australian team looking for confidence and momentum to get this Olympiad rolling after the troubled London campaign.

  • Tomorrow morning at 09:00 Danish time, the 2013 Danish Long Course Swimming Championships begin with prelims in the Bellahøj Swim Stadium in Copenhagen, to run until Saturday night. The selections for the Barcelona 2013 World Champs have already been decided to be Jeanette Ottesen, Rikke Møller Pedersen, Lotte Friis and Pernille Blume, and the Poznan 2013 European Junior Champs squad as listed here. Ottesen has decided to attend the Aspria Swimming Cup 2013 instead of the Danish Champs, but other than that, most of the high-profiled Danish swimmers will be there, plus our guy Pál Joensen from the Faroe Islands.
