In a move that has been coming for quite some time, Michael Phelps has re-entered the testing pool at USADA and has been tested twice in the last quarter by the organization according to the latest release of stats today.

Swimming World first got wind of the fact he was back in the testing pool earlier today when Phelps surprised everyone in attendance by taking a dip in the warmup pool at the Arena Grand Prix in Minneapolis this afternoon, and has been waiting for proof with the release of quarterly stats that were expected to drop.

Just minutes ago, USADA updated its website with the proof that Phelps more than made the November 6 mythical deadline to comeback and give the sport another go by actually having entered within the last quarter. Enough to induce a pair of tests.

Viktor B. Bromer set a new Danish record of 1:54.86 in the 200 meter individual medley, and these swimmers qualified for the Herning 2013 European SC Championships:

    • 400 free M – Mads Glæsner, Anton Ø. Ipsen, Frans Johannesen
    • 200 IM W – Julie A. Lauridsen, Sidse Kehlet, Julie Leth-Espensen
    • 200 back M – Magnus Jákupsson
    • 200 fly W – Katrine Holm Sørensen
    • 200 IM M – Viktor B. Bromer, Daniel Skaaning, Chris Christensen
    • 50 breast W – Rikke M. Pedersen, Louise B. Dalgaard, Kelly R. Rasmussen

The Danish Swimming Federation confirms their qualification in this press release (in Danish).

Of more gossipy stuff, I’ve been told that Anders Lie had to skip the Danish SC Champs (and thus the European SC Champs on home soil) because of scholarly obligations in the US. And Mie Ø. Nielsen had a scare earlier this week, when her shoulder suddenly popped painfully during strength training. She is okay though, it seems, seen nursing her shoulder with an ice bag at these champs, but still easily clearing the Danish time standard for Herning 2013 with a time of 58.59 in the women’s 100 back prelims.

    What to expect

Hopefully a high-level first race between Mads Glæsner and Pál Joensen in the 400 freestyle, with Frans Johannesen and Anton Ørskov Ipsen also going under 3:51.14 to secure their spot on the Herning 2013 team. A cruise victory by Rikke Møller Pedersen in the 50 breaststroke, and a lot of happy faces when not so well-known names are called out as national team members.

Pál and Mads pretty beat at Istanbul 2012

Danish site svoem.dk mentions Mads Glæsner, Anders Lie and Rikke Møller Pedersen as favorites for finals and maybe medals, in their preview for a similar Day 1 of Herning 2013.

  • From this Thursday 14 November until Sunday 17 November, Gladsaxe will host the Danish Short Course Championships 2013, that will decide the Danish squads for the Herning 2013 European Short Course Championships, and the 2013 Nordic Championships / Nordic Junior Championships in Tórshavn, Faroe Islands.

The Danes have relaxed their selection criteria, but also limited the qualification period to only these Championships, which should account for 4 very exciting days in Gladsaxe. A total of 579 swimmers are registered for the meet, of which Danish Swimming’s high performance manager Mikkel von Seelen expects about 35 to qualify for Herning 2013, plus an unspecified number for the Nordic Champs.

All 4 final sessions will be live streamed here on dr.dk, with live results here on livetiming.dk. The competition program is quite similar to the one at Herning 2013, but without semifinals, addition of the 800 for men and 1500 for women, and with a bit of reordering of events within each individual finals session, I guess to better accommodate swimmers who do multiple events.
