Plymouth’s swimming superstar Ruta Meilutyte is hitting the books as well as the pool in a bid to safeguard her future.

The 16-year-old Olympic gold medallist and world record holder is concerned about what comes next should her meteoric swimming career come to a sudden end.

Lithuanian international Meilutyte, who swims for Plymouth Leander, won the Olympic gold in the 100m breast-stroke at the London Games in 2012.

The Plymouth College student is also the world record holder in the event.

The teenager, who has lived in Plymouth for four years, said: “I am taking GCSEs this year and they are really important to me.

While Evan Holm seems to be destroying a record player in his latest installation, rest assured that Submerged Turntables is actually Holm’s way of paying homage to all of the greatest musicians in history. The California-based artist constructed a forest-themed installation inside his studio, which Holm then took apart and re-installed inside SFMOMA. Consisting of tree limbs and a small expanse of water, the entire piece centers around a record player that has been immersed in water.

A post-mortem carried out on Midmar Mile swimmer Herman “Thabo” van Straten, who died competing in the race on February 8, has shown he drowned.

Police spokesman Captain Lolly Moodley said on Thursday there were no injuries to his body.

Van Straten, a 43-year-old businessman from Joburg, disappeared while swimming in the race’s business relay event two weeks ago.

His body surfaced about 800m from the start of the 1 600m race late last week.

This after a six-day search by the police search and rescue team and Ezemvelo KwaZulu-Natal Wildlife.

Van Straten was said to be extremely fit and had trained extensively. He completed last year’s swim in 34 minutes.

His death has seen the safety of the race brought into question.

A team of firefighters have rescued a bull from a swimming pool in Texas after it escaped from a local ranch. The bull wandered into the back garden of a residential home in San Antonio and fell backwards into a covered swimming pool. Members of the San Antonio Fire Department and Animal Control were on hand to assist with the rescue. “It fell in the pool down here in the deep end and then they got it pulled over to the end and just kept its head above the water, and then it got out,” said homeowner Dottie Bierschwale.
