    Seven boats constructed only of careboard and duct tape raced across the Pete Ragus Aquatic Center recently in the first Texas Tech/Lubbock Independent School District STEM challenge.

    The boats were all occupied by four middle school students. The O.L. Slaton team won the competition.

    In Abano Terme, Italy, the construction of the deepest swimming pool in the world had begun in a hotel named Terme Millepini. Project architect and manager of the hotel, Emanuele Boaretto, started excavation for the Y-40 recently, which is a concept swimming pool for now.

    Devoted to driving professionals and amateurs, the pool will be the deepest on the planet, achieving its depth world record with a level of -40 meters below surface.

  • Largest swimming lesson held to teach water safety

    Local pools took part in a worldwide event to promote safety in the water.

    It was also an attempt to break the record for the largest simultaneous swimming lesson.  Children packed several local pools for a 30 minute swim lesson.

    Last year’s record-setting crowd drew more than 32,000 swimmers and represented 13 different countries.

    A man accused of a probation violation tried to swim away from police in the New River near Jacksonville.

    But 30-year-old David Milam was captured Tuesday night by US marshals and other officers. Milam was wanted by North Carolina State Probation and Parole Service for a probation violation after being convicted of assault last year.
