Two years ago, the idea of a cross-Channel swim wasn’t the top of Nick Else’s priority list.

But when he was warned by his doctor that he risked developing type 2 diabetes because of his weight, the 32-year-old from Clayton-le-Woods decided to take drastic action.

He crossed the channel in a three-stage swim as part of his fitness regime. But, since then, he’s lost 11 stone – half his body weight – and is now ready to dive back into the water in an attempt to beat his personal best.

“The reason is probably cultural. Right now if you’re a child growing up in Brisbane (where Widmer hails from) you will be pretty much influenced to swim freestyle and if you grow up now in Singapore you have your heroes in that (butterfly) stroke,” said the Australian.

“Our butterfly model is quite good and young kids will see Jo Schooling and they will try to copy him.”

Pau Ribes wanted to be a synchronized swimmer since he watched his first show at the age of 7. Unfortunately, at the time, synchronized swimming was a sport only practiced professionally by women. Still, he didn’t give up on his passion, with the help of Panteres Grogues—a nonprofit dedicated to helping the LGBT community succeed in sports. In 2015, Ribes made his debut on the world stage, marking the first time men were allowed to compete on an international level. He hopes to continue swimming and smashing barriers, with the goal of one day being able to compete in the Olympics.
