  • Do you love going for a dip once in a while? If you do, then what happens if you can’t enjoy a good swim because of a troubling back? Well, the answer is not quitting, but instead, you need to look for ways to solve such an awful issue. Luckily, I’m here to help you get rid of those chronic back problems that ‘hit’ you after going for a dip in the pool.

Although painkillers and other drugs may help, they are not a long-term solution. I’ve found that getting the most suitable mattress plays can help with lower back discomfort. They come in innerspring, latex, foam and air-filled models and they support your back in various ways!

    They Have Superior Comfort

Proper support as you sleep is something that’s important in the life of a swimmer. Remember that even the slightest pain in your back can still reduce your sleep. So, consider getting a firm memory foam mattress and enjoy its fantastic comfort.

I love these mattresses because they fold up according to the shape of your body, relaxing and soothing your muscles in the process. Sometimes, you feel as if you’re sleeping in the clouds and floating through the skies. In doing so, they get you up and ready for the day with your back problems now far behind you!

    Spinal Alignment

I also like the memory foam mattresses because they support your sleeping posture. These models do not ‘dictate’ your sleeping behaviors. By conforming to the shape of your body, they are simply ‘following your lead’ but lend a helping hand when it comes to aligning your spine. Other than their sinking feeling, they give you just the right kind of firm support after a long day of swimming.

Healing and Repairing Strained Muscle Tissues

One of the reasons why you get back pains after swimming is because you’ve strained some of your muscles. While applying ointment helps in reducing the pain, once it wears out, the feeling returns. Sleeping on a firm mattress, on the other hand, supports these tired muscles throughout the night as they repair and heal themselves.

Are you sleeping on a sagging or firm mattress? Answering this question will help you know if you’re sleeping on a good quality or old mattress. As you do this, keep in mind that the body of a swimmer should not rest on sagging or soft bed.

    Efficient Distribution of Weight

I’ve also discovered that one of the reasons why most swimmers are suffering from chronic back pains is poor weight distribution during the night. From talking with a few swimmers, I realized that they sleep on mattresses that make their bodies hang in a particular direction.

It’s quite a terrible situation as it leads to misalignment of joints and muscles. With such poor sleeping positions, it’s not surprising that most of them complain of having sharp pains on their lower back. If you’re also going through the same ordeal, start by replacing your mattress with a firm innerspring mattress.

There’s nothing that should prevent you from swimming, not even chronic back pains. The key here is taking no shortcuts in discovering the root of the problem. Remember that we spend lots of hours in bed! So, as a swimmer, are you being fair to your back when you sleep on an old and sagging mattress?
