A 29-year-old New Jersey man has died of a brain-eating parasite after swimming in a wave pool at a Texas resort.

Fabrizio Stabile swam at the BSR Cable Park in Waco, Texas during a visit to the area, before returning home to New Jersey.

Then on Sept. 16, Stabile was mowing the lawn when he had to stop due to a severe headache. He took medication and slept through the night, but was still dealing with pain the next day, and went back to sleep with more medication.

That afternoon, his mother tried to wake him up but Stabile was unable to get out of bed or speak coherently, and he was rushed to the hospital, according to his GoFundMe page.

Surf breaks, rips, gutters, currents, dumpers, stingers and even former prime minister Tony Abbott.

Nature throws plenty of challenges at ocean swimmers, but sharks rarely concern Paul Ellercamp.

“Most sharks are not a problem,” he said. “They’re graceful creatures, generally quite inoffensive and unthreatening, often curious, and when you do see them, often quite stimulating.”

An avid ocean swimmer, Mr Ellercamp said he had encountered a few sharks during his years of ocean swimming: “They’re really not that interested in us. They’re busy looking for fish.”

  • PCBs threaten to wipe out half the world’s killer whales within decades, study finds

While the use of polychlorinated biphenyls, more commonly known as PCBs, has been banned for more than a decade, the chemical pollutants continue to threaten animals at the top of the food chain. A new study published in the journal Science predicts that current concentrations of PCBs can lead to the disappearance of about half the world’s population of killer whales within the next three to five decades.

PCBs have been used around the globe in electrical components and plastics since the 1930s. More than one million tons of the pollutants have been produced. Previous research has shown that PCBs are toxic to animals, shown to impair reproduction, disrupt the endocrine and immune systems, and increase cancer risk.

Several countries began banning the use of PCBs in the 1970s and 1980s. In 2004, more than 90 countries committed themselves to phase out and dispose of the large stocks of PCBs through the Stockholm Convention.

However, PCBs are slowly decomposed in the environment and continue to have detrimental effects on a number of animals.
