‘Everyone’s stripped down’: Why ocean swimming is growing in popularity

Surf breaks, rips, gutters, currents, dumpers, stingers and even former prime minister Tony Abbott.

Nature throws plenty of challenges at ocean swimmers, but sharks rarely concern Paul Ellercamp.

“Most sharks are not a problem,” he said. “They’re graceful creatures, generally quite inoffensive and unthreatening, often curious, and when you do see them, often quite stimulating.”

An avid ocean swimmer, Mr Ellercamp said he had encountered a few sharks during his years of ocean swimming: “They’re really not that interested in us. They’re busy looking for fish.”
