It is glamorous to have a swimming pool in one’s backyard. It helps in maintaining a good fitness routine even with busy schedules and increases the charm of the house during parties and get-togethers. It also provides a private place for the family to relax, unwind, and even get a good tan. A lot of deliberations and discussions happen before the actual decision to buy a pool. This is understandable since a swimming pool is a huge monetary investment.

Before choosing a swimming pool design for your home, it is important to take all factors into consideration, like backyard size, budget, material availability, and local building codes. You should also be mindful of the maintenance requirements of the selected pool type.

Factors to consider while choosing a swimming pool

There are numerous factors that should be considered before deciding on your swimming pool design. Some of them include:

    • Budget
    • Use of the pool
    • Space available in the backyard
    • Maintenance requirements
    • DIY ambitions

Different designs for a swimming pool

The swimming pool in your home can be designed in different ways depending on factors like your backyard space, the pool’s use, and the required aesthetic. Some common and popular swimming pool designs include:

    Infinity pools

Infinity pools, also called negative edge pools or wet edge pools, are pools where the water flows over one or more edges, producing a visual effect of water with no boundary. Other names for them include infinity edge, vanishing edge, disappearing edge, and zero-edge pools. These pools are custom-built and are built along with the construction of the home. They are one of the most expensive home swimming pools. The main focus of infinity pools is to enjoy the beautiful view of the surrounding landscapes. When constructed properly, infinity pools give the impression of a blanket of water cascading over the brink of the property. This gives the illusion of a waterfall, even if you cannot see or hear the water drop.

    In-ground swimming pools

These pools are one of the most popular swimming pool options and are great for families. They are highly durable and can be customised according to the choice of the pool owner. In-ground pools are available in three different materials, namely concrete, vinyl, and fibreglass. This is the best pool choice for families that need a multi-purpose swimming pool. These pools are costly and need routine cleaning and maintenance. But they help in improving the resale value of the home and are a really good investment for homeowners.

    Above-ground swimming pools

These pools are one of the least expensive choices for a home swimming pool. The installation process is easy and quick. You can also customise the pool to have features like jet sprays and lights. No elaborate landscaping is needed for these pools. This helps in cutting down the installation costs to a huge extent. Since the entry point into the pool is above ground, there is minimal risk of accidental falling. The major disadvantages are that they are not aesthetically pleasing and are not durable.

    Indoor pool

These pools are suitable for well-to-do families with a stretchable budget and unlimited space. They are indoors, covered by a roof, and typically insulated at the very least by one house wall. They are simple and built for year-round swimming. They are also usually constructed in geometric shapes. Even though the initial cost of indoor pools is high, they require a lot less maintenance and have better heat retention.

    Lap pools

These are swimming pools constructed for doing laps to maintain physical fitness and keep healthy. They are almost comparable to regular-sized swimming pools. It is their unique proportions that make them distinctive. While regular-sized swimming pools are balanced and wide, lap pools are rectangular, tapered, and long. Typically, a lap pool is about 40 to 75 feet long, with the width ranging from about 6 to 10 feet. The depth of the pool is fashioned in such a way that it is sufficient to walk in as well as swim laps at an athletic level. They also have a seating area for relaxation and cooling off in the water. These pools are suitable for health enthusiasts struggling with limited backyard space.

    Architectural pools

An architect is required to design these pools. Prior to the installation process, they require a great deal of planning and sophistication. The design usually includes complex and unique components, making the installation expensive and time-consuming. These pools are designed to complement the house and landscaping. They are aesthetically pleasing and drastically increase the value of the property.

    Natural pools

These pools employ plants to filter the pool water rather than using harsh chemicals, making them an environmentally friendly option. They require two different areas of the same size, one for regeneration and another for swimming. The regeneration area is a shallow zone filled with crushed gravel, aquatic plants, and water. The water from the swimming area is circulated through the regeneration area using tubes and pumps and is cleaned naturally. These pools can be made elegant and unique with beautiful landscaping. These pools are a bit expensive and require more backyard space for installation.

    Plunge pools

These are small fibreglass pools used for athletic and therapeutic activities and for cooling down after a spa session. These pools are suitable for health-conscious people with very limited backyard space. They can also be constructed as an extension of in-ground pools.

    Spool

This is a small pool suitable for lounging rather than intense swimming. These pools are a great place for relaxing and socialising with your friends and family. You can also add features like lights and jet sprays. It is cheaper compared to normal swimming pools. These pools will be a great addition to backyards with limited space.

    Wrapping up

A swimming pool is a really big investment for many homeowners. It not only enhances the home value but also improves the overall beauty of the house. By carefully considering the advantages and costs of each pool design, you can choose a pool best suited for your needs and add charm to your backyard.

Thank you for sharing this! I see that you didn’t say anything about saltwater pools. They are quite popular nowadays, and this is because the water in such pools is softer, doesn’t have a pungent smell of chlorine, and is gentler to the eyes and skin.
