  • Lone Channel swimmer found 500 metres off Dover after eight-hour search

A nearly eight-hour search for a person trying to swim from Dover to Calais unaccompanied has ended after he was spotted by a passing vessel.

Emergency services launched a major operation to try to locate the male swimmer, who was eventually found just 500 metres off Dover.

A helicopter and rescue teams were dispatched to the sea off Kent after the coastguard received a call from a member of the public saying a friend was trying to cross to France.

The 27-mile stretch between Dover and Calais can be dangerous and is home to the world’s busiest shipping lane.

The rescue operation started just after midday and continued until nearly 8pm on Sunday.

When found, he was cold and tired but otherwise well, the coastguard confirmed. He has been brought to shore and will be checked over by ambulance staff.

Experts in water safety and survival said the beaches in Singapore built on reclaimed land could spell trouble for people swimming there. The warning comes after a teenager drowned in waters off Changi Beach. The Singapore Civil Defence Force attended to 12 water-related incidents in the first half of 2020. In 2019, it responded to 36 cases, down from 38 the previous year.

Silfra, in Þingvellir National Park in Iceland, is where the Eurasian and North American continental plates are dividing. It’s a crack in the earth where you can snorkel or dive between the continents. Well, sort of. As ever, it’s a bit more complicated than that.

Authorities in eastern Germany have banned swimming in parts of the river Unstrut after claims that a crocodile was seen there.

Officials in Burgenland county, about 185 kilometers (115 miles) southwest of Berlin, said late Saturday that the ban would remain in place until Sept. 6.

Extensive searches for the reptile have so far produced no evidence of its existence, they said.
