Each year, on the first of January, thousends of Dutchies make their way to the beach at Scheveningen to dive into a freezing ocean. The first Scheveningen Nieuwjaarsduik took place in 1965 and the event is sponsored by smoked sausage maker Unox, which provides all the swimmers with an orange hat. The main swim has only been cancelled once before, in 2007, when the weather was too cold and strong current made the sea too dangerous. This year covid was the joy killer, but Adi was brave enough to do it all by himself!

An extraordinary act of bravery has cost a young policewoman her life after she tried to save a swimmer trapped in a whirlpool at Mount Wilson in the Blue Mountains. Both women were sucked into a vortex of raging waters and did not emerge with police finding their bodies this afternoon.
