    On the banks of Lake Baikal in Siberia, where temperatures plummet to as low as -35 degrees celsius (-31 fahrenheit), around a dozen Russians emerge invigorated after an icy dip. To ring in 2021, the swimmers, known in Russia as “walruses”, run several kilometres through a snowy forest in swimsuits and festive costumes before plunging into the world’s largest freshwater lake.

    The first Chinese national swimming competition ever held on New Year’s Day is taking place in Shijiazhuang, capital of north China’s Hebei Province. Olympic Games gold medalist and world champion Ye Shiwen, men’s 100m breaststroke Asian record holder Yan Zibei and a number of other renowned swimmers are expected to join in the competition. In action today are 50m and 400m freestyle, 100m breaststroke, 200m butterfly, and 200m individual medley finals.

    Me, Jack, Kieran and Dolly flew to Dubai so we could continue to train with the UK under Tier 4 COVID-19 restrictions in place since Christmas. We spent the first day training at the Epic Hamdan Pool with Max and working out in the hotel gym.

    Two years ago, Russia’s Kirill Prigoda claimed the Gold Medal in the Men’s 200m breaststroke final at #FINAHanghzhou2018. The Russian covered the distance in 2:00.16 seconds and set a new World Record, beating Haiyang Qin, who clinched the silver medal, and the previous world record holder Marco Koch who took the bronze.
