    It’s a crossing that’s well known to Highland travelers – the stretch of the Beauly Firth spanned by the Kessock Bridge.

    But the waterway used to be home to a traditional swimming event.

    Now there are plans to bring it back, more than 50 years on.

    South Africa’s first black freediving instructor, Zandile Ndhlovu, is dedicated to exposing underprivileged youth to the ocean world.

    Dubbed the black mermaid, Ndhlovu says she wants to diversify ocean spaces because they have historically excluded Black, Indigenous, and people of color.

    Through the Black Mermaid Foundation, she facilitates snorkel excursions for children living in Langa.

    Vitomir Maričić (Croatia) can’t walk on water, but he can do the next best thing – walk under it.

    After walking a total of 107 m (351 ft 0.5 in), he has broken the record for the longest underwater walk with one breath (male).

    The previous record belonged to fellow Croatian freediver Boris Milosic, who walked 96 m (314 ft 11.5 in) in March 2020.
