NSRI Open Third Survival Swimming Centre | eNCA
South Africa has thousands of kilometers of beaches, and in rich neighborhoods, hundreds if not thousands of swimming pools.
But alarmingly, only one in every seven South Africans knows how to swim.
According to the National Sea Rescue Institute, about 1500 people drown each year — an average of four people per day. This is why the institute has opened the third of its NSRI Survival Swimming Centres.
After launching similar facilities in the Western and Eastern Cape, KwaZulu Natal communities can now also benefit.
The newest facility was recently opened at a school on the KZN south coast and will service the greater Port Shepstone area.
Let’s find out more from the NSRI’s Drowning Prevention Manager Andrew Ingram.

The Coast Guard says two aircrews got a mayday call Friday from a boat that was floundering in the surf near Cape Disappointment.
A Coast Guard boat crew was also called out, but the surf made that kind of rescue too dangerous – so they lowered a rescue swimmer into the water.
This was Petty Officer First Class Branch Walton’s first rescue.

A quadcopter that can fly like an aerial drone, but also splash down into water and operate like a submersible, could be used for search and rescue missions or engineering inspections.
Ben Chen at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and his colleagues created a prototype device called Mirs-X, which weighs 1.63 kilograms and is 38 centimetres wide. It can hover for 6 minutes in the air or dive underwater for around 40 minutes. Mirs-X is waterproof at depths of up to 3 metres and moves at up to 2 metres per second in water.
