The Austrian freediver, Herbert Nitsch, defies the depths of the ocean and goes from one amazing feat to another. He has held the world record for freediving since 2007: – 214 meters! The British director Alexander Abela, who is also a freediver, shadowed him for many months while he trained, and also during international competitions in Greece and the Bahamas. In order to reach these extreme depths, Herbert draws on the breathing techniques of marine mammals and forces himself to do hours of training every day. At one with the sub-aquatic world, he is looking to go beyond Man’s limits rather than just break records. His dream is to go deeper than 300 meters!

Even though there are signs warning not to swim in the black sea off of Odesa’s coast, locals have had enough and decided to take their chances to cool off anyways. Today I take my chances and join them.

Swimming needs a little personality and World Championship medalist Katharine Berkoff is happy to provide it. With arguably the funniest walkout video at Worlds, Katherine Berkoff likely distracted a few competitors from what they should be focusing on – her ridiculous backstroke speed.

  • Doping’s Dark Shadow Is Cast Over Freediving | William Trubridge

Freediving is the purest aquatic discipline. Since the start of my career I’ve always referred to it as “the purest measure of human aquatic potential.” But that all seems to be at stake recently, with the advent of both known and alleged doping cases. I hope that our beautiful sport doesn’t go the way of some others, and we can keep deceit out of the seas. If you agree with me then please help to share (and improve on) this message.

Something I forgot to mention in the video is the safety aspect of doping, and how it exposes doping athletes, those who follow them, and even those who safety them, to unknown risks such as deep water blackouts and severe lung squeezes. I’m less qualified to speak on this subject, but it is even more relevant than the FairPlay side of the story.
