US lifeguards top ten (safety) tips
- Swim Near A Lifeguard: USLA statistics over a ten year period show that the chance of drowning at a beach without lifeguard protection is almost five times as great as drowning at a beach with lifeguards. USLA has calculated the chance that a person will drown while attending a beach protected by USLA affiliated lifeguards at 1 in 18 million (.0000055%).
- Learn To Swim: Learning to swim is the best defense against drowning. Teach children to swim at an early age. Children who are not taught when they are very young tend to avoid swim instruction as they age, probably due to embarrassment. Swimming instruction is a crucial step to protecting children from injury or death.
- Never Swim Alone: Many drownings involve single swimmers. When you swim with a buddy, if one of you has a problem, the other may be able to help, including signaling for assistance from others. At least have someone onshore watching you.
- Don’t Fight the Current: USLA has found that some 80% of rescues by USLA affiliated lifeguards at ocean beaches are caused by rip currents. These currents are formed by surf and gravity, because once surf pushes water up the slope of the beach, gravity pulls it back. This can create concentrated rivers of water moving offshore. Some people mistakenly call this an undertow, but there is no undercurrent, just an offshore current. If you are caught in a rip current, don’t fight it by trying to swim directly to shore. Instead, swim parallel to shore until you feel the current relax, then swim to shore. Most rip currents are narrow and a short swim parallel to shore will bring you to safety.

Is ASCA doing business fraudulently ?
Hard accusations here on curbnorthside.blogspot.com, concerning the business operations of the American Swimming Coaches Association (ASCA), SwimAmerica, World Swimming Association (WSA), …
ASCA is listed as a foreign corporation in Florida. Foreign, in corporation lingo, means not incorporated in the state. I originally had images of a corporation concealing their finances in Grand Cayman. It turns out John Leonard and George Block have an even better deal. Their annual reports to Florida state they are incorporated in Iowa. I checked the Iowa department of state. John Leonard registered in Iowa in 1968 but was terminated in 1992 for failure to file reports.
ASCA is not a legitimate corporation so there is no government oversight into their finances. It is not registered as an assumed name in Bexar County, and it is unlikely to be registered in any county. This is a fictitious entity.
In many states it is considered fraud if you present your business under a name other than your proper legal name without proper notification such as filing a DBA (doing business as) or registering as a corporation.
I confirmed ASCA status on Iowa’s website and verbally with the Iowa department of state. ASCA, SwimAmerica, WSA, and possibly several other business entities seem to be doing business fraudulently.

Europe wants its own Olympics
IOC member Patrick Hickey is proposing a “European Games”, thought to have backing of IOC president Jacques Rogge, and likely to be put to a vote in November, with the support of 47 of the 49 European National Olympic Committees. The reason being that other continents already have their own Games with Pan American Games, Pan Arab Games, All-Africa Games and Asian Games, and that Europe is loosing track when it comes to Olympic medals.
“European results at Olympic Games are diminishing all the time. Whereas we used to win the most medals, we are now dropping out of that zone,” he [Patrick Hickey] said.
“We have a feeling that a European Games can be used to spark European supremacy again at the Olympic Games.”
The big problem is of course scheduling, with the sporting calender already being crowded, and meaning that a European Games might have to replace existing events such as the European Athletics Championships [and maybe the European Championships in swimming?].

Faroese keep on setting national records
Faroe Islands hasn’t seen the same stagnation in records now after the supersuits were banned, as most of the rest of the swimming world. Since the ban in January 2010 the Faroese swimmers have set 42 Faroese records and 127 junior records in 2010, plus Pál Joensen’s Nordic record of 14:56.90 in the 1500 meter long course, from when he won silver at the European Championships in Budapest 2010.
This year, there have set 17 more Faroese records and 37 junior records, the latest being set yesterday and this morning at the ongoing Faroese Short Course Swimming Championships in Tórshavn. There will most certainly be more records set this evening and tomorrow, during finals and the last day of the championships.
Faroese television is broadcasting the finals live, as far as I know also unlimited on www.kringvarp.fo, and we also try to have informative landing pages on www.livetiming.se and www.svimjing.com/live, embedding and linking to live timing, live streaming, live chat, etcetera.

Parents of Adlington cheated out of money for Olympic tickets
The parents of double Olympic gold medallist Rebecca Adlington were cheated out of more than £1,000 by bogus ticket touts as part of a multi-million pound fraud, a court heard today.
Kay and Steve Adlington paid £1,100 to what they thought was a legitimate website selling tickets to the Beijing Olympics, jurors heard.
But the tickets never arrived forcing them to miss their daughter’s first gold medal triumph in the 400m freestyle final.
