Former Olympian and Swedish national coach Glen Christiansen visited Lebanon this week, for the second time this year, leading a 6 day training camp for Lebanese youth, 40 in total aged 8 to 17, spanning from relative beginners to elite swimmers. Plus had two-hour sessions for adults in the evening, in addition to the all-day youth sessions. What an amazingly good job, promoting our great sport in a war-torn country. Via simma.nu/se

  • I should have been a Newport lifeguard

When thinking about career options with high salaries, lifeguarding is probably not one of the first jobs to come to mind. But it apparently should. In Newport Beach, lifeguards are compensated well, when compared, say, to the county annual median household income is $71,735. Even excluding benefits like health care and pension, more than half the lifeguards receive a total salary, including overtime pay, exceeding $100,000. And they also receive an annual allowance of $400 for “Sun Protection.” And probably get all the girls too. Read more here on the Orange County Register.

(The only video I found on the issue right now. I don’t necessarily agree on his point of view, as lifeguards in my view perform an at least as important job as for instance some stock broker burning his own and other people’s money)

Experience from University College South Denmark suggest that if exercise is an integral part of an education, fewer fail and more people get high marks. 40 nursing students got the opportunity to exercise 3 times a week during lunch hour, resulting in their overall module 1 grade point average jumping up to 6.51, compared to 4.74 in 2009 and 3.80 in 2010. They say that it is too early to make any firm conclusion, but think that all programs should consider incorporating exercise and sports, as a win for the students but also to society that may have a better and healthier population.
