So, Pál Joensen is now on his first altitude camp ever, in Sierra Nevada in southern Spain, together with the Danish national team and a few other swimmers. But it was no easy trip from Copenhagen to the Sierras, as they had Pál’s coach Jón Bjarnason with them, who is notoriously unlucky when it comes to flights.

So yesterday I got in contact with Dr. Ivan Tsanov, Secretary General of the Association of the Bulgarian swimmers and Editor-in-Chief of the number one Bulgarian website about swimming, www.bgswim.info with about 15000 daily visits. He asked me about Faroese swimming, and has now been so kind to translate my somewhat hurried response and put it here on bgswim.info. It is mostly about how tiny we are; you could have it autotranslated by Google, but for comfort I’ll put my summary of Faroese swimming here in English after the break. I’ve probably stepped on a few toes back home with this text, but there you go.

In June 2005, Patrick Musimu redefined human boundaries and became the first freediver to reach a depth below 200 meters (218 yards, 656 feet). Great pro-quality video here featuring him investigating the ancient freediving techniqe of the sponge fishermen on the island of Kalymnos in Greece, where they used a special (heavy) stone called a skandalopetra to dive head-first into the depths with, comparing it to how in the Persian gulf Emirati divers also used a stone or weight made of iron to dive (feet-first).
