One-year-old Lucky, a penguin at the Santa Barbara Zoo, had one leg that wasn’t growing right, making him walk with a limp. Zookeepers tried a splint first, but that interfered with his ability to swim, and they therefore contacted local shoe company Teva. Read more here on Nothing To Do With Arbroath

LOL – “If swimmer Geoff Huegill thought losing 45kg for his comeback was tough, yesterday’s challenge really put him to the test. Huegill barely survived a 50m charity swim – while wearing jeans, a dress, a trenchcoat and leather shoes. The man they call Skippy was racing against 12-year-old Maddy Harley, who was swimming for her good friend Julz Free who suffers from cystic fibrosis. The race – which Maddy won – helped raise money for Cystic Fibrosis NSW after the girls put the idea to 2GB’s Ben Fordham, who asked Huegill to come on board.” Source The Telegraph via the17thman

Born in 1918, Adolph “Sonny Boy” Kiefer was the first ever to swim 100 yards backstroke under 1 minute. He won the 100 backstroke at the 1936 Summer Olympics in (Nazi) Berlin, was asked to audition for the role of Tarzan but joined the US Navy instead and served during World War II, was appointed to set guidelines for safety and training there and taught more than 33,000 navymen to survive in water, before building the succesful and innovative Kiefer brand. Worked with the major of Chicago building swimming pools across the inner city of Chicago, providing facilities needed for countless children to learn to swim. Now well up in his nineties, he suffers from neuropathy that has put him in a wheel chair, but still swims in spite of this, and can instruct us on the importance of aquatic therapy. What a man.
