German news giant Der Spiegel recently contacted Sander E. Smørdal of simma.nu/no, long-time friend and training partner of Alexander Dale Oen, requesting an interview in Bergen. Problem only that Sander left for the Faroe Islands the Monday following Alex’s burial Friday, to train Jón Bjarnason’s squad in Vági until mid June, while Jón is on altitude camp with Pál Joensen and the Danish Olympic team in the U.S. Well, then Der Spiegel comes here, world media yet again setting it scopes on these minute islands, albeit coincidentally.

The Danish Olympic team going for a bike ride at 3000 meters altitude in Leadville, Colorado, judging by their faces very early in the morning. Paulus Wildeboer looking sceptical at the BMX-size bike that he got, and Bjarnason apparently giving up on the idea entirely :-)

Nine days after becoming the first ever Israeli swimmer to claim gold at the European Championships, Jonatan Kopelev booked his place at the London Olympics on Saturday, clocking a time of 54.38 seconds in the 100 backstroke in a competition in Slovenia. He and Guy Barnea were given one last chance to set the Olympic Qualifying Time of 54.40s on Saturday, and Kopelev did so by two hundredths of a second to reach his first Olympics, while Barnea will miss out on the Olympics after participating in the Beijing Games four years ago. Read more here on The Jerusalem Post.

35-year-old Paulo Henrique Dos Santos had decided to paint himself green for Rio de Janeiro’s Challenge For Peace run, a big hit last year but this year his local paint store was out of his usual brand. So he tried an industrial brand, commonly used for painting ballistic missiles and nuclear submarines, it worked fine, didn’t come off during the run … or the next 24 hours of bathing and scrubbing. Soap, shampoo, detergent and alcohol, with girlfriend, neighbors and mom trying their luck, while Dos Santos worried if he’d ever get a job again now turned into the “Hulk of Vila Cruzeiro”. 17-year-old Sycerika McMahon from Belfast, Northern Ireland, winner of the women’s 50 meter breaststroke silver medal at the Debrecen 2012 European Swimming Championships. Her first major senior medal, but undoubtedly even more more happy for having qualified for the London 2012 Olympics in the 100 breaststroke 6 days before.
