ADHD parenting advice from Michael Phelps’ mom
Ahh, Debbie Phelps is brilliant, a middle school teacher for more than decades, now principal, who when Michael at the age of 9 was diagnosed with ADHD didn’t give up but found ways to keep him focused.
After Michael kept grabbing a classmate’s paper, Debbie suggested that he be seated at his own table. When he moaned about how much he hated reading, she started handing him the sports section of the paper or books about sports. Noticing that Michael’s attention strayed during math, she hired a tutor and encouraged him to use word problems tailored to Michael’s interests: “How long would it take to swim 500 meters if you swim three meters per second?â€

Another high school swim coach charged with sex crimes
32-year-old Grand Ledge High School teacher and coach Jason Algra has been charged with eight counts of criminal sexual conduct involving two students, bail set at $250,000. Three counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct punishable by up to life imprisonment, and five counts in the third degree punishable by up to 15 years imprisonment. Researchers at MIT have developed a process called “Eulerian Video Magnification” to ‘reveal temporal variations in videos that are difficult or impossible to see with the naked eye and display them in an indicative manner. 10-20-30 training concept improves health and performance with less training
Researchers at the University of Copenhagen have come up with a new training concept for runners that shows an increase in health and performance of up to a minute on a 5K run despite a 50% reduction in amount of training. They say that 30 minute is all you need, therefore easily adapted into a busy life, and since it deals with relative speeds interspersed with rest and low-speed running, individual with different fitness levels can perform it together. Read more here on ku.dk, via Lifehacker.The 10-20-30 training concept consists of a 1-km warm-up at a low intensity followed by 3-4 blocks of 5 minutes running interspersed by 2 minutes of rest. Each block consists of 5 consecutive 1-minute intervals divided into 30, 20 and 10 seconds of running at a low, moderate and near maximal intensity, respectively.

Exciting men’s 4×200 freestyle relay at the Debrecen 2012 European Swimming Championships, with Hungary and Belgium and others trying to qualify for the London 2012 Olympics. The Belgians had to manage a time of 7:15.65 (12th best time from Shanghai 2012) in order for their country to nominate them, behind after three men had swum but then last man Timmers posted a scorching 1:46.90. Team clocking 7:15.58, seven hundredths of a second under the cut :-)
