“It was about an hour’s sail south of Capetown, cutting through the water on Mike’s 110-foot sailboat Pangaea, when “it” appeared. At first, on the horizon, we noticed what appeared to be a giant ball of bait fish. The water boiled for literally a mile in every direction…only as it approached at the speed of a swift wave did we see first a nose, then another, then a dorsal fin and then a thousand of them, then more. Only then did we realize we were experiencing the rare “superpod” of dolphins. Not dozens, not hundreds, but thousands of them — so thick you could have walked across their backs had they been game for it.” Read Chase Jarvis’s blog via Neatorama

When University of Cape Town researchers lowered a specially-designed “baited” camera into False Bay to film life underwater, they had not reckoned on the wiliness of the bay’s octopuses. Not only did one manage to open the bait canister and eat its fill of the pilchards inside, but some of its mates made off with bits of equipment.

UCT research assistant Lauren de Vos said yesterday: “We were flummoxed by how clever they are, smart enough to unclip the bait canister which is not easy, and we’ve had several pieces of equipment stolen. We’ve got it all on film.”
