Greece will not compete in the European short course swimming championships starting this week for the first time in 16 years due to financial problems, Hellenic Swimming Federation (KOE) president Dimitris Diathesopoulos said on Wednesday. Read for instance Yahoo! Sports and Eurosport

“We had decided in the summer that we would not attend the European event this year, mainly due to financial reasons,” the Diathesopoulos said.

“We programmed this according to our budget constraints and the fact that the World championships are so close.

“Of course we are disappointed that we will miss out for the first time since 1996 after so many successive appearances, but these days a lot of things are happening for the first time in Greece’s history.”

Wow, as America’s swimmers celebrated their Olympic success at the annual Golden Goggles awards in New York, and Australia prepared to host its own Swimmer of the Year awards bash in Melbourne, it emerged that the British version, the Splash Awards, was cancelled following the withdrawal of support from British Swimming. Read Pullbuoy

@pullbuoy sadly British Swimming pulled out at late notice (didn’t want to be seen to celebrate after poor Olympics!) so I had to cancel :-(

Michael Phelps reported to the jury pool Tuesday at Baltimore Circuit Court, along with celebrity chef Duff Goldman. Sheriff’s Capt. Sam Cogen tells The Baltimore Sun that Phelps drew such a buzz that courthouse employees and other prospective jurors began crowding in to take his picture. He says sheriff’s officers had to intervene and make an announcement about courthouse conduct. Read CBS Baltimore

Russia’s Stanislav Donets 23.16 and winner of the men’s 50 backstroke at the FINA / Arena 2012 Swimming World Cup meet in Berlin, Germany. Australia’s Robert Hurley 2nd in 23.57 and Guilherme Guideo from Brazil 3rd in 23.63, see result list here. Donets has as of 20 Nov 2012 the two top male European individual performances this short course season according to SwimRankings, with his 49.49 in the 100 back and 23.12 in the 50 back from the Tokyo world cup meet, I guess somehow not yet counting Yannick Agnel’s performances from the French Nationals.
