Don’t take my word for it, but I think this is an invention of our local head coach, Rúni Gaardbo, here at FLOT in Toftir, Faroe Islands: The kids are divided into two teams that must stay behind the lane ropes. The kickboards are arranged in pairs upright as shown on the photo, equal amounts on both sides, and each team is given an equal amount of many (soft) balls. The guys in the middle are assistant coaches resupplying the players with balls stuck in the middle lane. First team to shoot down all kickboards has won. Some choose to attack, some choose to defend. We call it ‘plátubólt’ (‘board ball’), and it is extremely fun :-)

“Like swimming in noodle soup”, he said afterwards, describing the experience of swimming in the shallow fresh water lake Vatnið (“the lake”) in Vágur, Suðuroy, Faroe Islands, back in June 2010. Jon Hestoy here to the right, President of the Faroese Swimming Federation, and to the left Jón Bjarnason, coach of Pál Joensen, helping young swimmer Erna Katrin Olsen with her zip lock.

The most successful Olympian in history sat for an interview with Costas Tonight this week and credited the team’s viral Call Me Maybe video for bonding the team. The clip, which has over 10 million views on YouTube, was a sensation this summer before London.

“It’s funny to say it now, but that Call Me Maybe video we did really brought us together,” Phelps told Costas. “There are some of us who didn’t really want to do it, felt kind of weird doing it, but I think it really just shows how we are as a team.”
