Award-winning short film director Adam Strange was killed by a great white shark off the coast of New Zealand today, at Muriwai, a popular surfing beach near Auckland. Mr Strange, who has worked across the world, has made television commercials for companies such as Pepsi, Toyota and Samsung, and won a Crystal Bear award for best short film at the 2009 Berlin Film Festival, according to his company’s website. Rescue crews took an inflatable boat out and shot at the shark 20 times but it vanished below the surface. Read for instance Sky, The Australian, IB Times and CNN

“He was still alive, he put his head up, we called him to swim over the rock to where we were.

“He raised his hand up, and then while he was raising his hand up we saw another attack pull him in the water.”

The Faroese Swimming Association (Svimjisamband Føroya) visits HS Tórshavn (Havnar Svimjifelag), as part of our annual roundtrip to all Faroese swim clubs. Which sounds more impressive than it is, as there are only 6 active swim clubs on the Faroe Islands. Still, halfway through the program tonight :-P

Minders at the Toba Aquarium in Japan say a male giant isopod know as “No. 1” last ate now more than 1500 days ago, on 2 January 2009, a horse mackerel which it devoured in just five minutes. That’s 18 days before President Obama began his first term. They’ve tried everything, but the animal justs pretends to eat, rubs its face on dead fish, before walking away. But, the mysterious behavior has not taken an obvious toll on No. 1, which has reportedly remained healthy during its long period of abstaining. Read for instance NPR

“Giant isopods are always in a state of semihibernation because they don’t know when they can eat, so they limit their energy on breathing and other activities,” marine ecologist Taeko Kimura tells Japan Times. “For that purpose they sometimes keep a large amount of fat in their livers, so maybe No. 1 still has a source of energy in its body, and that’s why it still has no appetite.”

A former vice president at USA Swimming claims the organization’s new screening procedures failed to detect a coach with multiple identities and a felony conviction.

Mike Saltzstein filed a complaint Monday asking for a review of a person known as James Pantera, who became involved with San Diego Imperial Swimming last year.

In the complaint obtained by The Associated Press, Saltzstein said his review found the person has at least 11 identities and three dates of birth, and that he was sentenced to a year in federal prison for making false statements and fraudulently obtaining student loans.

“What Oscar did in the sport of track and field is amazing … what he did and what he overcame. My thoughts and prayers go out to [Reeva’s] family … It’s just a tragic event,” he said. “I think one thing that … I think a lot of people think that celebrities and athletes are different, but we’re all just human beings.”

Golf is so boring that the Golf Channel needs to bring in an Olympic swimmer to get people to watch.

OK, that’s a bit of an exaggeration. But it’s entirely possible that the most buzz the Golf Channel has ever gotten surrounds the appearance of Michael Phelps on “The Haney Project.”
