In an adorable video posted to YouTube by the Oregon Zoo, a 2-month-old baby river otter named Molalla gets a swimming lesson from his mother, Tilly. She nudges Molalla close to the water before grabbing her pup by the scruff of his neck with her mouth and plunging into the water with him.

“This might look a little brutal to us,” the Oregon Zoo’s Becca Van Beek says on the video. “It’s kind of scary for us to watch, but it’s natural for them.”

  • Jinja set for Africa’s maiden ice swimming event

Jinja will go down in history as the first African city to host the Ice Swimming championships due May 11 at the Nile resort pool.

The championships will see the water temperature in the swimming pool lowered to about 10° C, a rare phenomenon in Uganda, for the championships to take place.

Swimmers will then take part in an individual 25m race before grouping up for the relay races in the ice cold pool waters.

    – So that would be about 3°C warmer than the year-round ocean temperature here in the Faroe Islands. I’m tempted to say “we laugh at this” … but won’t ;-)

The Danish Swimming Federation has announced their preliminary selection for the 2013 World Swimming Championships in Barcelona, to be the four individually qualified Jeanette Ottesen Gray, Lotte Friis, Mie Østergaard Nielsen and Rikke Møller Pedersen, plus Pernille Blume selected for the women’s 4×100 freestyle relay. The final selection has to wait partly because two swimmers have been granted dispensation, to try to qualify at a meet in the US on 11-13 April 2013. My best guess is that that would be the 2013 Arena Grand Prix at Mesa, where Anders Lie Nielsen is competing. See svoem.org.

  • Lance Armstrong formally banned from U.S. Masters Swimming events

A few hours after FINA, the global organization that oversees aquatic sports, sent a letter to U.S. Masters Swimming recommending that Lance Armstrong be denied permission to swim in a Masters meet this weekend, USMS has banned the former cyclist from any future Masters swim meets.

So that would be the news breaking that he would race, FINA then objecting, Lance withdrawing and then U.S. Masters Swimming banning him, all in a few hours.

The internet is abuzz but confused.
