“But then they get to connect with one of their own, Miami’s own James Jones, two-time NBA champion. So wonderful watching their little faces light up knowing this isn’t just another swim lesson we’re getting today, our favorite team is here to help us with one of the most important things, to keep us safe during the summer time.”

The most decorated Spanish swimmer of all time Mireia Belmonte Garcia has launched a stinging attack on the coverage of the sport in her homeland after breaking two world records at the World Cup meet in Berlin last weekend.

“I am the first woman to go under eight minutes in the history of swimming, but a rumour about a (football) signing or the colour of Sergio Ramos’ hair is more important,” she said.

Following the champion’s scathing attack on twitter over the 2009 World Championships prize money, the Italian swimming federation, FIN have responded with a depth charge and made public the earnings of the Italian swimmer between 2006 and 2012. “The athlete Federica Pellegrini has personally received a total of around 750.000 euro, for her ranking in European competitions and study grants; this excludes prizes relating to the Olympic Club and the contributions from CONI for the Olympic medals.”

147,000 euro for the Rome championships alone.

Fede hits back at the FIN: “I am shocked at the statements made by the president of my sport. It would be all to easy to respond to the mathematical calculation of the prizes by looking at the long list of medals and records achieved between 2004 and today. And all of this becaause I criticised them.”

  • Russia and IOC say don’t be openly gay at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics

Read for instance this blog on Slate

On Monday, the Russian Interior Ministry confirmed what other Russian officials have been saying for weeks: Openly gay people attending the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, including athletes, will be arrested under the country’s draconian new anti-gay law. That law, you might recall, prohibits “homosexual propaganda” and is designed to discourage any kind of support for gay rights or even gay people.

The International Olympic Committee’s response to gay people? We mean it: Stay in the closet.

According to an IOC spokesperson, the Olympics aren’t the place for “proactive political or religious demonstration,” anyway. Just read the fine print: Rule 50 of the Olympic charter declares that “no kind of demonstration or political, religious or racial propaganda is permitted in any Olympic sites, venues or other areas.” By the IOC’s logic, gay people should be keeping quiet about their sexuality no matter what, in accordance with Rule 50. If they speak out and get arrested under Russian law—well, it’s not the IOC’s fault that they just couldn’t keep their mouths shut.

The British Athletes Commission expresses concern for athletes aiming for Sochi 2014.

Stephen Fry has a ‘brainchild’, but I guess you could be arrested for that
