Training for an open water swim events needs to be taken step by step. First you master your stroke and adjust to the distance in a safe and warm environment. Alongside this you take up gym sessions and learn to control your diet. After all of these have been perfected, you then take steps to adjust to the freezing conditions of open water swim. I’m going to give you some tips on the first stage of starting preparation in the pool and explain why it’s important.

A new fad is sweeping the capital of landlocked and war-weary Afghanistan: swimming pools.

The city has at least eight massive new pool clubs.  Extras usually include saunas, Jacuzzis, massages, smoothies and sandwiches.

“Sure, we don’t have beaches like Brazil, or clubs like Dubai. But we have created our own beaches and clubs here with these pools,” said 25-year-old college student Mirwaiz Taraki between back-flips at the Nazari Sauna and Pool in Kabul’s posh New City neighborhood.

Tonight at the West-Danish Regional Short Course Championships in Aarhus, Aalborg’s elite team led by Mie Østergaard Nielsen demolished the Danish (club) record in the women’s 4×100 medley, with a time of 4:00.21 replacing Swim Team Odense’s Danish record of 4:03.06 from the Danish Short Course Championships in 2009, then featuring Rikke Møller Pedersen in the breaststroke. The Danish national team record is 3:49.87, from when they won gold at the Istanbul 2012 World Short Course Championships.

Aalborg’s split times now were Mie Ø. Nielsen 57.35 – Louise B. Dalgaard 1:08.6* – Mathilde Pugholm Hvid 59.7* and Julie Levisen 54.38 (*the breaststroke and butterfly splits apparently a bit messed up of technical reasons, see the result list)
