The Australian Olympic Committee is set to send more psychologists to the Rio Olympics to meet athletes’ increasing demand for mental support.

It comes after sporting stars, including champion swimmers Leisel Jones and Ian Thorpe, spoke out about the mental anguish they endured in pursuit of winning a gold medal.

Aware of the growing issue, the AOC and its Athletes’ Commission have shifted their focus to “culture and leadership” and the psychological welfare of athletes in the build-up to the 2016 Games.

Ruth Anderson was head psychologist for Australia’s Olympic team in Beijing and London, and last year experienced a huge demand for her services. Anderson said yesterday the nation’s sporting bodies must provide more mental health support to their athletes because if they did not, it would “limit” the Olympians’ performance at Rio.

Everyone knows it or has seen it at least one time in their life, and have tried to recreate it on numerous occasions. Well, as revealed by Bleacher Report on Sept. 26, 2013, the Navy men’s swimming and diving team recreated the image in epic fashion, underwater.

A father and daughter were found safe Friday after swimming to shore and walking 5 miles after their boat capsized on the Indian River near Titusville.

Wallace Schroder, 53, and his 10-year-old daughter were found walking along NASA Causeway about 5:30 a.m. Friday, authorities said. The pair flagged down a driver, who called for help.

Schroder said their boat capsized late Thursday night after they left the Parrish Park ramp, and they had to hold onto the boat as it floated. He said his daughter had a life vest and they swam to shore.  […]

“It got pretty cool last night and you’re also fighting the current and the wind,” said Lenny Salberg of Florida Fish and Wildlife. “When you have a vessel that’s capsizing, going under so quick, you really don’t have time to grab anything.”

Three Valley swimmers are getting ready for a swim that would be considered a major undertaking for anyone. But their swim is about a lot more and may just prove inspiring.

They will swim to Alcatraz on Sunday for the Annual Alcatraz Invitational in San Francisco.

The three though are visually impaired and make up the first blind team to compete in the event.

“To be honest it is about bragging rights,” said 17-year old Max Ashton. Ashton only has minimal peripheral vision.

Rightly or wrongly, Daniel Bell has been tagged as Swimming New Zealand’s bad boy. The 23-year-old admits he did a few things wrong when he was younger, but he has matured and is keen to resurrect his career in the pool. He talks to Murray Hills about his goals. […]

“People have a perception of me as a bad boy. There’s been lots of negative articles written about me and in some cases I’ve been quoted when I didn’t even talk to the reporter,” he said this week as he prepares to get back into competition mode at the New Zealand short course championships, starting in Wellington on Sunday. […]

Bell’s immediate goal is making the New Zealand team for next year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
